Here is the second in our silent 'e' series of free phonics games. The first wasa-e where we give detailed instructions as to how to introduce silent 'e' words.
This game helps to give practice in quickly determining whether to lengthen the vowel or not, depending on whether there is a final 'e' or not. This fun phonics game gives plenty of practice in reading words with both a long and short 'i' sound, and the pupil will be so caught up in the game that s/he will not mind reading lots of words. the simple addition of red and green 'lights' just adds another dimension to the game that children so much enjoy. Suitable for those just being introduced to silent 'e'
What makes our games unique? It is simply this: we do not suprise children, knocking their confidence by suddenly throwing in words that break the rules, or have sounds that s/he has not yet learnt. Many so called phonics games/worksheets/reading books do this as the authors do not truly understand how chidlren learn phonics - especially children with any need of any description, where method is crucial to success. It is precisely because of this weakness that many give up on phonics.
Before playing:
On our Reading Made Simple site we outline how best to teach silent 'e' words. See our lesson plan here.
