Different people give different names to this concept:
magic 'e' silent 'e' split digraph:a-e powerful 'e'
Whichever your pupil is used to using, keep with that term to avoid confusion. I prefer to call it 'Powerful e' as it reminds the pupil that the 'e' has power and I prefer power to magic.
Reaching the stage of learning powerful 'e' words is often a momentous point in phonics learning. It is an area that will need a lot of practice in the coming days. What are powerful/silent 'e' words?
Not all words with an 'e' on the end are powerful 'e' words. Some words just have an 'e' to look pretty, as I explain it to my pupils. Powerful 'e' words are just that: the final ''e is being powerful - its doing something!
What is it doing? Let's look a little closer. Powerful/silent 'e' has the power to change the vowel to say its name rather than its sound.
Listen to the vowel sound in these words and see what a difference the 'e' on the end makes.

I like to use this game soon after introducing a pupil to powerful 'e'.
- Just download the file, print the game pages on card and cut the cards out.
- Find a feely bag to put the letter cards in.
- I like to laminate my games to make them last longer.
- Have a plastic folder ready to store your game in.
