A poster and a place mat
Today I am pleased to bring you a delightful early learning place mat, just right for those rising three's and upwards for you to download and print for free. At this stage it is a good idea to introduce children to the letter shapes in an informal way, just so they begin to be familiar with them. Pin an alphabet frieze on the bedroom wall, and display a copy of this mat as a poster somewhere where it will be seen.
Then print off another mat in card and laminate it, or cover it with tacky back plastic. This can be used at mealtimes. Make sure you know the initial sounds yourself, first.Make mealtimes learning times
While your child is waiting for the meal talk about the letters. Start with one letter and introduce it. "This is the letter 'aye' and it says 'a'." Now of course the letter does not actually say 'a', but rather it stands for the sound 'a', but this is rather a mouthful for a young child. I explain this as they get older, but for now, 'aye' says 'a' will suffice. At the next meal, say "Can you remember what this letter says?' "That's right it says 'a'. 'Aye' says 'a'."Once they have got that one, then choose another. 'S' is an easy one to remember.
Once the child knows most of them, you can begin to get them to point to the letters as they say the alphabet. It is good to sing it to a tune. The Grand Old Duke of York is a good tune, as the most common one that we all grew up with is very confusing when it gets to 'l,m,n,o,p' and I have had many children think these five letters are one letter called 'lmnop'!'!
