Today I have some more Free games for you to download and print! This time, I am adding some more alphabet games as I know that children need more help in these early days of learning to read and spell. As with all my games, you just have to download and print and then cut out the necessary parts and you are ready to play. Occasionally a small box/bag is needed too - nothing elaborate, anything will do! I like to keep my games safe and all the cards together in aplastic wallet. First learn the initial sounds yourself.
I prefer to teach these 26 sounds as quickly as I can. I find the best way is to take one sound each day, and use flashcards. so the first day I show 'a' and tell the child its name and sound and we say 'Ay' says 'a'. We then look for things that begin with the sound a. The next day we begin with the 'a' flashcard and say 'Ay' says 'a' ' and then I introduce 'Bee' says 'b'. Each day we revise the previous sounds and add a new one. Once they are all introduced we practice the flashcards daily until they are all know well. At the same time we work together on establishing the 'hearing' of initial sounds. We will play incidental games around the home:
I spy something beginning with 'b'. Can you see something that begins with 'b'? 'Look, I can see a 'bbbball'. I can see a 'sss' on this packet. Can you see the letter that says 'ssss'? I will pin an alphabet frieze on the wall for casual reference and games like 'Can you find the letter that begins the word 'frog'? Listen 'fffffrog'. I will buy an alphabet puzzle once all the letters are learnt, to give practice in ordering the alphabet and reinforcing knowledge of the letter sounds.
b/d Game
My first game is to help with b/d confusion. Many children have this difficulty and it requires patience and perseverance to help children overcome it, but many will successfully do so in due time. But this game will help.
The first key to avoiding b/d confusion is not to introduce the two letters too closely together, so don't play this game if you are only just introducing these letters to your child. However, if your child is still having difficulty once s/he starts to need to recognise them quickly to blend cvc words, then this game helps the child to look closely at the two letters and find a way of differentiating between them. Not all children need this however.
If you are teaching these letters for the first time, keep them apart as much as possible and do not draw attentino to their similarities. Make sure that the child learns to write each letter as they learn its sound. Pay attention to the formation of the letter: 'b' starts with a 'bat' to hit a ball the way we read, 'd' goes round like an 'a' and up and down. In the box GameVowel Games
Then I have some vowel games. This is basically two sets of cards with pictures of things that begin with the five vowels and a baseboard for sorting them on. Two games are suggested, you may think of more!
