Initial sounds - the bedrock of reading and spelling

  • Every child must be able to hear the initial sound of a word before they are taught to blend.
  • They must also be able to say the sound that each letter represents.
  • They must also be able to select the letter that matches a sound provided by the parent/teacher.

Many try to gloss over this stage as if it were unimportant.
PARENTS/TEACHERS: This is the most important stage. Children need a thorough knowledge of the 26 letters of the alphabet before they start to blend - or many will fail. Letter names are not so important: letter sounds, shape and formation are very important.
A good, phonetically correct, alphabet book is vital for teaching intial sounds. If you do not have one, you can use our especially made video. Pause the video and only look at one new sound a day.
