Over the course of many years teaching KS1 classes to read and spell, I have had need of a variety of worksheets to reinforce the day's lesson. Reading and spelling go hand in hand together and I like to teach them that way, as each helps the other.
The value of worksheets in phonic teaching To me, worksheets are not time fillers, but rather valuable assessment tools. The good phonic teacher should be constantly assessing, and should have no need of external tests to help them determine what a child needs next to help them progress. They will watch and listen to how each child responds to the lesson being taught. They will ask questions:
Very often a worksheet will go some way to help - along with a game. As the child completes a sheet - which may not be difficult in and of itself - the child will be having to read and write. Linking these two is imperative if a child is to make good progress. Somehow, the physical act of writing words helps to fix them in the brain. So, the good teacher will have in mind the stages of phonic learning, and if not already aware, will become knowledgeable of the various difficulties encountered along the way. They will devise little ways to help pupils over these hurdles. Of course, this takes time and so here I am pleased to offer you a selection of 8 free worksheets to download and print which have been designed for this purpose. Each sheet has been written to meet a need of a real child. Note: These a but a sample of the many worksheets that are available for FREE download from this website and can be accessed here.
How to use the worksheets: The sheets are suitable for both the school and home-school setting. Suitable for: Literacy centre work, guided reading activities, for homework activities, for assessment and much more! You can: Let the children work the sheet alone, and then go through it together, praising where they are correct and looking together at what has gone wrong (where applicable), using it as a teaching opportunity and you will be looking to see if this point has been grasped next time you work with an individual child. OR Work together from the start, talking about each picture/word, but again assessing each individual child's response to help you plan future work.
When children are young they can be encouraged to colour the pictures neatly, to help to develop pencil control. As they get older they will find this practice tedious. I hope you find these worksheets helpful. What is included? Eight FREE worksheets covering: ‘ck’, ‘ee’/‘oo’, ‘sh’, ‘ar’ and ‘or’ These sheets are compatible with all phonic schemes, however as different schemes introduce sounds at different time, just check that your pupil knows all the necessary digraphs to complete the sheet. For example, the word shark has both sh and ar and so both should have been learnt before expecting the child to read and spell this word.
Teachers - if you like these, then we have plenty more! See these at TES or TPT in Lilibette's Resources shop.

I would like more information on your resources please. I am a teacher supporting foundation phase children and teachers.
Hello, I am so sorry to have missed your post by not receiving notifications. This website has all of my free resources, mainly, but not exclusively in a format for parents. My books of resources for teachers can be found on either TES (https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/lilibette) or TPT (https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Lilibettes-Resources) .
I am so sorry - I forgot to set my website to notify me of new comments. You will see that the 30 free worksheets have been replaced by 8 - but the good news is that there are now far more than 30 free worksheets available to download on Sound it out Phonics.

Your resources are fantastic! Since starting homeschooling, I have struggled to find decodable reading books for my little girl and have been writing out my own sentences for her to read. Since discovering your 'Reading made Simple' books, she is now thoroughly enjoying being able to read a whole book! These worksheets look great, but please let me know if it is best to purchase them on TES / elsewhere. Thank you so much for all the effort that has gone into making these resources!
Hello - so sorry not to have picked up your comment on Sound it out Phonics. I am so thrilled to hear that you have found the phonic reading books to be of help. I know that there is a huge gap at this point, even for schools.
